Mark Word -- Principal

Mark Word’s interest in art, graphic design, and botany has led to a 15 year career designing commercial and residential landscapes. The work of his Austin-based company has been featured in national publications and is noted for its sensitivity to regional character.  Mark Word Design continues to collaborate with renowned architects to develop a unique vision of the relationship between landscape and architecture.

Billy Spencer – Principal

Billy’s career in horticulture started when he was a child in West Texas, where his family ran a mail order cactus business from their home in Marfa.  This unique high-desert community exposed Billy to broad ideas -- from the cultural influences of Don and Flavin Judd to the extreme weather fronts of the Dry Line that formed his design aesthetic and understanding of plants.  For the past 10 years, Billy has led the landscape construction division of Mark Word Design.  His attentiveness to detail and even-keeled approach to project management produces exceptional landscapes that are on time and on budget.

Sarah Carr  Partner – Project Manager

Sarah spent the first four years of her career designing thoughtful urban houses, drawing on her education as an architect and hands-on construction experience.  Given to artistic leanings and a deep love of nature it now seems inevitable that Sarah’s focus would transition to landscape.  For the past seven years, Sarah has led the MWD design office.  Her attentive design skills coupled with a keen understanding of construction sequencing offer an invaluable source of inventive ideas and practical strategies.

Shaney Clemmons, ASLA, LEED AP Landscape Architect -- Project Manager

With over 15-years of landscape experience, Shaney has honed her ability to move between big-picture thinking and construction detail, ensuring the original vision of a project is carried out through all phases of design and construction.  Shaney’s aesthetic is always informed by context.  She never approaches a site with a preconceived solution or a signature design in mind. The site’s history, community and story are critical to creating the perfect balance between built and natural environments.
